HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's tennis team downed NCAA Division III foe Thomas More (Ky.) College, 8-1, to close their participation in the PTR Spring Tennisfest tournament with a 3-1 record.
Lawrence Tech (9-6, 1-1) took an early 3-0 lead as the team won all flights in doubles action. Alexander Tammaro (FR/Caracas, Venezuela) and Alex Fernandez-Rajal (FR/Barcelona, Spain) downed Jared Haught and Derrick Kwok, 8-1 at court-one. Robert Saitov (JR/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru) and Lukas Obel (FR/Weybridge, England) took second flight, 8-1, against Ethan Caruso and Jaret Fidler, Viktor Kolesnychenko (FR/Lviv, Ukraine) and Alejo Godall-Tintore (FR/Barcelona, Spain) won 9-7 against Brandon Kwok and Wesley Smith at court-three.
The Blue Devils secured the victory in singles action with a pair of wins by Tammaro and Fernandez-Rajal. Tammaro defeated Derrick Kwok (6-0, 6-1) at first flight, and Fernandez-Rajal took court-three (6-1, 6-2) against Haught. The Saints chipped away the five-point deficit to four when Saitov fell 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Caruso at court two. Lawrence Tech stretched to the lead to 8-1 with three wins by Kolesnychenko (6-3, 6-0), Obel (6-0, 6-2) and Godall-Tintore (6-0, 6-0) at fourth, fifth, and sixth flights, respectively.
The Blue Devils will be in action on Saturday, March 23 when they face off with Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Cornerstone (Mich.) University (10-3, 0-1). First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich.
