Blue Devils Sweep Golden Eagles in WHAC Doubleheader

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team swept Cornerstone (Mich.) University in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Action on Saturday, April 20. The Blue Devils defeated the Golden Eagles 9-2 in game one and 6-4 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Lawrence Tech (31-7-1, 14-5-1) opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs. Cherilyn Banas doubled down the center and scored off an error by second baseman, Madison Gallagher. Kennedy Emmons and Gina Barber scored in the same play.

Cornerstone (8-32, 2-20) cut the three-run deficit with a run in the third inning. The Blue Devils scored a pair in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-1 with a double by Brittney Bult and a single by Brittany Wieland to score Katie Cyster and Bult, respectively. The Golden Eagles added a run in the bottom of the frame just to see LTU seal the victory in the sixth inning with four runs.

Alexa Cherney toed the rubber for the Blue Devils over the first game, in which she allowed two runs – one unearned – on four hits and two walks. In addition, Cherney sat down 12 of the 26 batters she faced.

Lawrence Tech outhit Cornerstone, 14-4, in game one, led by Wieland and Barber that went 2-for-3 from the plate. Bult and Wieland paced the squad with two RBIs apiece.

Unlike game one, the Golden Eagles opened the scoring in game two in the fourth inning with three runs and added one in the fifth. However, the Blue Devils engineered a six-run comeback in the last two innings of the effort to take the win.

In the sixth inning, Jackie Mattingly doubled down the right-center to drive in Barber and Wieland to cut the four-run deficit to two. In the seventh inning, Sarah Hige scored an unearned run off an error by center fielder, McKena Razenberg. Adams and Bult scored of a double by Wieland to give LTU their first lead of the game, 5-4. Barber sealed the Blue Devil victory with an RBI single down the middle to drive in Wieland.

Faith Barden started on the mound in the second game and pitched for three and two-third innings. Barden allowed three runs on four hits and struck out two of the 16 batters she faced. Sydney Coe pitched in relief of Barden for two and a-third innings, in which the Golden Eagles scored one run on three hits. Cherney pitched the final inning and surrendered no runs and no hits.

The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Monday, April 22 when they host Lourdes (Ohio) University at UD Mercy. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. In this game, Lawrence Tech will hold its annual Knock Cancer Out of the Park event and Senior Day to bid farewell to senior Cherilyn Banas.
