Box Score 2 Fort Wayne, IN - The Blue Devils softball team played a double header in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Thursday evening against conference opponent in the Warriors of Indiana Tech. Game 1 was a shootout throughout the entire game. Back and forth on both sides of the ball! This game came down to the bottom of the 7th where ITU was able to cap off the win in a close one with a final score of 6-7. Game 1 pitcher was Clover Brandt and Madison Shumaker. Game 2 was more of a pitching duel and a defensive game. Game 2 pitchers was Makayla Benz. LTU lost Game 2 by a score of 0-2.
Game 1 (LTU 6, ITU 7): The Blue Devils offense jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st from a double to right center from Lauren Lanphear. Moving to the 4th now, LTU found themselves a solid rally scoring 2 more runs. The runs came from a Nicole Powrozek walk and a Turk double. This gave LTU 3-0 lead. Indiana Tech fought themselves back into the game, by decreasing that lead to 6-4 headed into the last inning. The Warriors ended up scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to secure the win 6-7. Sarah Hige went 2-3 with 2 runs. Haley Mazon went 2-4 with 1 RBI. Elizabeth Coon went 2-3 with 1 run.
How it Happened: Clover Brandt was on the bump in Game 1 and had a pretty solid outing for the most part. She pitched 4.1 innings only giving up 5 hits. She gave up 3 ER and had 2 strikeouts. She faced 18 total batters. Coming from the bullpen, was lefty Madison Shumaker. She threw 1.2 innings giving up 4 hits and 4 runs, and faced 12 batters.
The Blue Devils batters finished Game 1 with a team batting average of .290, 4 RBI, 4 KO's on 9 hits. LTU left 9 runners on base. They were errorless free in this one.
Game 2 (LTU 0, ITU 2): Game 2 starter on the mound was righty Makayla Benz. She came in on relief in Game 1, but only pitched 0.1 innings. Benz pitched a great game throughout. Indiana Tech was able to score 1 run early in the 1st inning, but from then on, the game went scoreless until the 6th inning where Indiana Tech smashed a homer over the fence to extend the lead 0-2. Benz pitched a complete game in this one. She gave up 3 hits and 2 runs, strikeout 4 batters and threw 107 pitches, facing 25 batters.
How it Happened: LTU and Indiana Tech were both in a pitching duel in this one. Both teams played great defensively, and credit goes to both sides of the pitching. LTU was held to only 5 hits on the day coming from Lanphear, Brittney Wieland, and Sidney Croskey, Callie Tatum, and Sarah Hige. LTU left 5 runners on base. Some offensively life late in the game from LTU came in the top of the 7th where they had a couple runners on but left them stranded and just could not find any run support. The final in this one was LTU 0, ITU 2.
The Blue Devils ended with 4 total hits on 1 error. The teams batting average in this game was .192. LTU ended with 8 strikeouts as a team.
