Softball Splits a Pair Against UofM Dearborn

Brighton, MI - The Blue Devils softball team played a double header at home against the University of Michigan Dearborn. This game was played in Brighton, MI at the Legacy Sports Center. Game 1 started off slow from both teams, then LTU finally picked up the offense late and was able to string together a solid run support for their starting pitcher, Clover Brandt. The final score in Game 1 was 6-2. Game 2 starting pitcher was Makayla Benz. This game was a pitching duel from both teams.


Game 1 (LTU 6, UM 2): The Blue Devils offense started off a little sluggish, but really pick it up late in the game where they scored their final 6 runs from the 3rd inning to the end. A monster home run from Erin Wehler was exactly what the team needed in this one. She went 1-1 with 1 HR, and 2 RBI on 2 walks. Katie Courneya also had herself a solid day at the plate driving in 2 RBI while going 2-3 and 2 runs. Another Blue Devil who helped offensively was leadoff hitter, Sarah Hige going 2-3 with 1 run. LTU finished this game with 7 total hits and no errors.


How it Happened: Clover Brandt was on the mound for Game 1. She pitched a 2 run complete game in her win. She only gave up 5 hits and only forced 2 walks. She was hitting the corners as she was able to strike out 3 batters on the day. 28 total batters faced for her.

The Blue Devils finished Game 1 with a team batting average of .280, 6 RBI, and 3 KO's. LTU left 7 runners on base.

 

Game 2 (LTU 7, UM 0): Game 2 starter on the mound was Makayla Benz. She started this game off pitching pretty well, and was able to find herself only down by 2 runs going into the 5th inning. After the 5th, UofM Dearborn found the gaps and scored 5 runs in the 5-6th inning to extend the lead to 7-0. That is when Madison Shumaker came in to relief pitch and finish the game. Between the two pitchers they gave up a total of 14 hits. Benz gave up 11 and Shumaker gave up 3 hits. Benz faced 29 batters, while Shumaker only faced 8. The two combined for only a total of 2 strikeouts on the day. They gave up 7 runs.

 
How it Happened:  LTU struggled to get an offense going in this game. They were able to finish the game with 7 total hits, but could not drive in any runs. The team left 9 runners stranded on base. The team leaders at the plate for the Blue Devils were Sarah Hige (3-4), Brittney Wieland (2-3) and Nicole Powrozek and Callie Tatum were both able to find themselves 1 hit on the day.

The teams batting average in this game was .259, 0 RBI and only 0 KO's and 1 error on the game.

On Deck: The Blue Devils (10-13) next double header will be Friday, April 23rd. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 3 PM and Game 2 is scheduled for 5 PM. This game will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan where the team will take on Cornerstone University on the Cornerstone Softball Field.
