Marion, IN – The Lawrence Technological University men's tennis teams wrapped up the two-day Indiana Wesleyan University Pre-Season Tournament on Friday in an event that featured three matches.
The men had a tough task in their opening match on Thursday as they drew #16 Grace who rolled to a 4-0 win.
Lukas Obel /Jannis Schneider fell 1-6 at 2-doubles before Alexander Tammaro / Patrick Putschbach were doubled up 3-6 at 1-singles to surrender the doubles point to Grace.
Putschbach was blanked 0-6 in the first set of his 4-singles match and played better in the second as he won four games but fell in straight sets 0-6, 4-6.
Pedro Garcia Orellana dropped his 3-singles match 1-and-2 as the Lancers pulled to within one point of clinching the match at 3-0.
At 1-singles, Tammaro battled in his first set before losing 4-6 but his second set was a quicker affair, falling 1-6 as #16 Grace clinched the match 4-0.
The Blue Devils had a pair of tough matches on day two as they fell to Holy Cross 4-3.
The Saints won two of the three doubles matches with Tammaro / Putschbach cruising at 1-singles, 6-0, as the bright spot.
Tammaro rolled that momentum into a 1-and-0 win at the top singles flight while Hammarsten followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win to make it a 2-1 match in favor of Lawrence Tech.
The Saints won in straight sets at 5-singles to tie the match before Schneider dropped his opening set in a tiebreaker 6-7 (4-7) before falling in the second 1-6 at 4-singles.
With the Blue Devils trailing 3-2, Garcia Orellana won in a super tiebreaker 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 to force the match to turn on the result of the 6-singles match. Luca Roth struggled in his first set, 1-6, but recovered to take the second 6-4 and force a first to 10 winner take all to decide the match. Unfortunately, Holy Cross would prevail 10-6 to win the match 4-3.
After that heartbreaker, the Blue Devils ran into a buzz saw as they took on the #10 ranked host Indiana Wesleyan and were blanked 4-0.
The men return to action on Tuesday, September 7th when they head to Huntington for a Noon match.
