Blue Devils Bested by Chargers

Southfield, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University men's tennis team took the court in competition for the first time in 2022, falling to Hillsdale College 4-2 inside the Franklin Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.

The NCAA Division II Chargers received votes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Men's Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll back on January 20th.

At 3-doubles, Alexander Tammaro and Luca made quick work of the duo from Hillsdale, sweeping them 6-0 in the 6-game pro-set format.

The Chargers returned the favor at 2-doubles as Nils Hammarsten and Evan Morgan fell 1-6.

The match of the day came at the top doubles flight as Patrick Putschbach and Janis Schneider got into a back-and-forth duel with Cimpeanu/Barstow, the number 14th ranked doubles team in Division II. The LTU duo gave them everything they had as they pushed the Hillsdale pair to a tiebreaker, eventually falling 6-7 as the Chargers took the lone doubles point.

Hammersten dropped his 3-singles match 5-7, 0-6 before Evan Morgan won in straight sets at 2-singles 6-4, 6-3.

At the top singles flight, Cimpeanu, also the number seven ranked singles player, bested Tammaro 6-3, 6-4 to bring the Chargers within one point of clinching the match at 3-2.

Hillsdale would do just that at 4-singles as Pedro Garcia Orellana fell by identical 6-4, 6-4 scores.

With the match clinched, Putschbach's 6-singles match was abandoned with the German up one set (7-5) and in a tiebreaker in the second set at 6-6.

The Blue Devils have a quick turnaround as they host another NCAA Division II foe in Lake Superior State University tomorrow at 5 pm inside the Franklin Athletic Club.
