SOUTHFIELD, Mich. —Lawrence Tech's women's tennis team pulled out a tight 4-3 victory over Huntington University on Friday in Southfield, while the Blue Devils' men's squad dropped a 7-0 decision to the Foresters in dual action at the Northwestern Highway courts.
The women's match came down to singles play, where the Blue Devils stacked four key wins to secure the team result. Isabella Aray and Paola Herrera each claimed three-set super-tiebreaker victories, while Rocio Lopez cruised in straight sets and Miram McCormick closed out another deciding match tiebreak to give Lawrence Tech the decisive fourth point. The men's side picked up a doubles victory behind the pairing of Augustin Patte and Cael Guthrie, but Huntington controlled the remainder of the lineup to earn a sweep.
In women's doubles, the Blue Devils battled Huntington to the wire. The team of Jackie Alcocer and McCormick played to a 5-5 deadlock before the match was halted or left unfinished in the dual format. The pairing of Claudia Calabuig and Lopez also stayed competitive, dropping a close 6-3 decision. Despite not securing the overall edge in doubles, Lawrence Tech kept the margin narrow enough to stay within reach heading into singles, where the Blue Devils ultimately made their move.
Aray opened the singles surge with one of the tightest wins of the night. After taking the first set 6-4 and dropping the second 2-6, she outlasted her Huntington opponent 13-11 in a match tiebreak to put Lawrence Tech on the board. Herrera followed a similar script, winning the first set 6-4, splitting the second 3-6, and then closing out her match with a 10-5 super-tiebreak, turning another three-set battle into a Blue Devils point.
Lopez delivered the most straightforward singles result of the evening, controlling play throughout a 6-2, 6-2 straight-sets victory that helped swing momentum to the Blue Devils' side. McCormick then capped the women's comeback in another extended match, grabbing the first set 6-3, dropping the second 4-6, and responding with a strong 10-4 performance in the deciding tiebreak. Those four singles victories pushed Lawrence Tech past Huntington for the 4-3 team win.
On the men's side, Patte and Guthrie provided a highlight in doubles with a 6-4 victory, giving the Blue Devils an early spark at the top of the lineup. However, that momentum did not carry over into singles, where Huntington took control. Lawrence Tech's most competitive men's singles effort came from Tyler Brunsell, who forced a deciding tiebreak after splitting the first two sets. Brunsell won the opener 6-2, fell 6-7 in a tight second-set tiebreak, and came up just short 10-5 in the match tiebreak as Huntington completed the 7-0 team result.
With the split result, the Blue Devils' women's team gained an early-season confidence boost in close-match situations, showing resilience in multiple super-tiebreaks, while the men's squad collected valuable experience against a deep Huntington lineup. Lawrence Tech is scheduled to return to action on Feb. 6 at Davenport University before continuing its nonconference slate later in the month.
