Oberlin, OH – The Lawrence Technological University women's tennis team competed in the two-day Oberlin Invite this weekend, which included singles and doubles brackets.
Freshman Olga Aliagas Mejina was a standout for the Blue Devils as she went 4-2 on the weekend.
Singles Highlights:
Margot Fontaine won her first match on Friday over a foe from Slippery Rock 6-4, 6-4 before falling to another opponent from the Rock on Saturday 2-and-2.
Freshman Angela Anderanin also got off to a good start on Friday as she defeated her opponent from Allegheny College 6-2, 6-1 but again the Blue Devils would get bounced in the second round as she was upended 3-and-2 by a competitor from John Carroll. She responded with a straight-sets win over an opponent from Ohio Northern 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to go 2-1 on the weekend.
Aliagas Mejina got off to a strong start with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hoog of Case Western Reserve on Friday but faced some adversity after dropping her first set 3-6 on Saturday against Nouiaime of Oberlin. She recovered to win the second set 6-1 before doubling up her opposition in the super tiebreaker 10-5.
She would fall in the bracket championship to a foe from Denison 4-and-1 for a 2-1 weekend in singles play.
Doubles Highlights:
Fontaine teamed up with Samantha Kohn to go 1-1 on Friday as they defeated a duo from Kenyon 8-6 before falling to a pair from Oberlin 8-3 later in the day. The duo would be dispatched 8-4 on Saturday by a doubles team from Washington and Lee.
Aliagas Mejina / Alice Radde got off to a rocky start, losing 8-3 to Mukund/Patel of Case Western Reserve but rebounded as they beat Reese/Little of John Carroll 8-2. They followed that up on Saturday with a tightly contested 8-7 (7-5) win over Connelly/Alonso of Kenyon on Saturday.
The women are back in action on Friday, September 17th when they head to Ursuline College.
